Jetting off for a weekend break is just not what it was… arbitrary ash clouds pop up to scupper even the best-laid plans. You might get to your idyllic destination – but getting back can be a bit of a lottery. Throw in the odd crew strike and inhibiting baggage restrictions and that longed-for breakaway few days can turn into more of a stress exercise than the working environment you’re trying to escape!
Cue bringing it back to what’s on offer, right on our doorstep… and it doesn’t get much better, much more luxurious or much more bespoke than the Westcountry’s latest relaxation hotspot, The Cornwall Hotel, Spa & Estate. Opened earlier this year by the Countess of Wessex, this woodland retreat is set in 43 acres of beautiful Victorian parkland at Tregorrick near St Austell, less than two miles from sandy Porthpean Beach and ideally located for the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project.
But chances are, you might just want to kick around this fabulous secluded sanctuary incorporating the restored 19th-century Manor House as well as purpose-built Woodland Rooms, all with private balconies and panoramic views over the stunning walled gardens, ancient woodland, parkland and lakes.
Throw in the indulgent Clearing Spa in the converted stable block, which houses five treatment rooms – offering every kind of massage as well as facials, skincare and manicures – a state-of-the- art gym, juice bar and infinity pool, and you might well begin to think that foreign travel is rather over-rated. That’s certainly my view in this current climate – and a weekend visit with my husband to check out The Cornwall did nothing to convince me I’d got it all wrong.
There’s a real feeling of newness about the place as you sweep up the drive, a fresh and welcoming vitality just waiting to be discovered. Everything is clean, shiny, warm and friendly – from reception to the cosy seating areas scattered in every nook and cranny of the architecturally bold creation. Glass is everywhere, but it says classy not soulless.
A whistlestop tour with manager Will Oakley revealed the Manor House’s traditional bedrooms and suites as well as the more contemporary Woodland Rooms where we were staying – some were of a bold open-plan design with the bath incorporated within the bedroom. Outside, the landscaping promises much as 1,400 newly planted saplings settle in and join the abundance of mature specimens. It’s just a matter of letting Mother Nature do her bit now – and while it can’t be hurried, it can be pictured.
But the Cornwall is more than a luxury spa in a glorious setting. The final part of the vision is the collection of woodland homes, available to purchase or rent, beautifully equipped down to the last teaspoon and made entirely from wood by a company in Redruth. The first 22 of these fabulous holiday homes are nearing completion and are on the market from Pounds 299,950.

A CIRCUS performer was locked in a trance for five hours after he hypnotised himself while practising his routine in a mirror.
Sword swallower Hannibal Helmurto, 38, was unaware of being transfixed until wife Joanna found him.
She said: “I found him just like a zombie – staring at himself in the mirror.
“His pupils had gone really small, which is a sign of someone under hypnosis.”
Unable to rouse him herself, Joanna, 22, had to call the hypnotherapist who recently trained him to talk him out of the trance over the phone.

THE degree of solemnity with which the High Court at Auckland may pass down a verdict has mellowed since the days of black flags and caps, but the gravity with which it deals with its caseloads is no less rich and masterful.
Take this week’s case brought by listed produce marketer Turners & Growers (T&G) – valued at about $155 million on the NZX – against Zespri, the kiwifruit marketer that rings up sales revenues from fruit supplied from 2700 growers here and 1200 overseas.
Seven lawyers have, for four days, presented extremely detailed cases to an astute and distinguished Justice Douglas White. The beef is that T&G basically wishes to sell kiwifruit to whomever it wants and not, as the rules currently state, through Zespri. T&G began proceedings last year. This week’s hearing is a precursor to a full trial set down for next May.
The restructuring of the kiwifruit industry 10 years ago has seen relative peace and acceptance until now.
T&G is challenging regulations governing Zespri’s export monopoly. It wants the right to export its own kiwifruit varieties globally, but the Kiwifruit Regulations 1999 prevent any party but Zespri from exporting beyond Australia. T&G also wishes to commercialise its own varieties, like its ENZARed launched last month. But under the current regime it must go through Zespri.
There are side issues which are said to be rankling even formerly fervent Zespri supporters.
Currency exposures, for example, are said to have been as high as $200m and the subsequent risks carried not by the shareholders but the growers. There is concern over collaborative marketing agreements which are falling, not rising in line with crop increases.
There are perceived difficulties in winning licenses for new varieties from Zespri amid claims larger growers are suffering as a consequence.
Then there is the breakaway Independent Kiwifruit Growers Association chaired by Marcus Wilkins, set up in May “because it has no confidence in the ability of KNZ (Kiwifruit New Zealand) or KGI (New Zealand Kiwifruit Growers Inc) to act as effective watchdogs on the activities of Zespri”.
T&G claims Zespri has abused its position through exclusivity contracts and trying to take control of new varieties. Zespri’s annual meeting next month is expected to be interesting.
But KGI – an interested party to these proceedings – says it has 90 per cent of growers behind it and supports the status quo, a single marketing desk; that is, Zespri with KNZ as regulator
